Boris Johnson tells Michael Gove to continue with ‘stalled’ upgrade program

Boris Johnson called on the government to step up its flagship race-to-the-top policy, in a thinly veiled jab at ministers.

The former prime minister urged Michel Gove to urgently accelerate projects such as Northern Powerhouse Rail, planning reform and decentralization.

He described the Leveling Bill as stalled as he spoke in the House of Commons.

Johnson described the UK as one of the most regionally unbalanced of all major economies.

However, he said he has enormous potential waiting to be unleashed, adding: Isn’t it time to fast-track the now stalled leveling bill and move forward urgently? with Northern Powerhouse Rail, planning for reform, decentralization, security of affordable energy supply, gigabit broadband and all the other leveling measures that will make it the strongest and most prosperous economy in Europa?

Communities Secretary Gove thanked Johnson for his leadership on the issue which drew laughter from the Labor benches.

The former prime minister could be seen shaking his soap opera at Labor MPs and accusing them of stealing Tory policy.

Gove went on to praise Johnson’s determination before attacking Labor leader Keir Starmers five missions for the country.

The Leveling and Regeneration Bill is currently before the House of Lords and underpins a series of economic rebalancing targets, which were set out in a government white paper published last year .

Johnson’s intervention came against the backdrop of an extraordinary row between the government and the covid inquiry over his WhatsApp messages.

The government is trying to block the inquiry’s order to release the communications, arguing it shouldn’t have to turn over documents that are unambiguously irrelevant.

However, a challenge Johnson bypassed the government and told the inquest he was happy to hand over all of his own communications from that period.
