50 West Virginia lawmakers sign letter endorsing Donald Trump

A letter to the people of West Virginia has dozens of members of the West Virginia Legislature endorsing former President Donald Trump in the 2024 Republican primary.

As president, Donald J. Trump fought for conservative Republican principles, the letter says. “Trump is the most capable proven candidate to rule our country.

The letter is signed by 40 members of the House of Delegates and 10 senators, or just under half of the members of the Republican majority in both bodies. Trump’s endorsements in the letter include Senate Finance Chairman Eric Tarr R-Putnam, Senate Education Chair Amy Grady R-Mason and House Majority Leader Eric Householder , R-Berkeley.

Notable absentees from the list of letters are Speaker of the House Roger Hanshaw, R-Clay and Speaker of the Senate Craig Blair, R-Berkeley.

The letter and the approval effort were written and organized by Del. Josh Holstein, R-Boone. Holstein said he received a communication from the Trump campaign about doing something about West Virginia that supported the former president’s bid for re-election.

I said I would like to do legislative endorsements, Holstein said. I think we could get a significant number. So I started calling. It’s a very mixed group. There is a lot of leadership. There are many people from different parts of the state.

Holstein believes the impact of the letter shows strong support for the former president. He said it was a channeling of what most voters already feel. Trump was West Virginia’s landslide winner in the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections.

Our constituents are very supportive of him and his platform, Holstein said. I just think it reinforces that we’re responding to them and speaking for them. I think that’s one of the ways we can do it appropriately.

Holstein said the election and campaign cycle never really stops, and the release of this letter, months before a crowded Republican presidential primary, is part of the flow of information.

It’s important for candidates to get out early and get their feet wet, Holstein said. I think that’s why we see so many presidential candidates, including the former president, running so early, and that’s also why we wanted to make a statement.
