Rishi Sunak back from US to face storm over Boris Johnson honors and Red Wall unrest
The Prime Minister was due to attend a meeting in Doncaster of Tory MPs, many of whom risked losing their Northern seats in the former Red Wall.
Other Cabinet ministers were also due to address the Northern Research Group rally amid turmoil within the party, with polls showing it trailing Labor by double digits.
Mr Sunak, after what is seen as a largely successful two-day visit to Washington, in part to boost transatlantic economic ties, has also faced more controversy over Mr Johnson.
Labor was seeking to paint the Prime Minister as weak for not putting the shredding on Mr Johnson’s resignation honors list, which could be published as early as Friday.
Mr Sunak remained tight-lipped about whether he had accepted the list of candidates which is said to contain around 50 names when questioned in Washington.
Mr. Sunak said: I can totally understand the interest of this topic. All I can say is that a process is currently underway. It’s not finished yet and until it is, it wouldn’t be fair for me to comment further.
But Sir Keir Starmer suggested the leader of the Conservative Party needed to appease different elements of the ruling party with his handling of the honor roll.
The Times reported that the list had been reduced, with ex-culture secretary Nadine Dorries and Sir Alok Sharma, chairman of the COP26 climate summit in Glasgow, removed.
If they are not given the peerage, it would avoid two by-elections. Sir Alok holds a majority of 4,000 votes over Labor in his constituency of Reading West and Labor could win there. Ms Dorries, who has already announced her intention to step down as MP for Mid Bedfordshire in the next election, has a majority of 24,600 but the Liberal Democrats are preparing to target any by-election there.
Mr Johnson’s father, Stanley Johnson, is also believed to have been removed from the list. Former Prime Minister Liz Truss, despite being the shortest prime minister in modern British political history, is also said to have submitted a short resignation honors list.
Meanwhile, Mr Johnson has received the findings of an investigation by the Privileges Committee into whether he misled Parliament over the partygate scandal, it has been reported. Mr Johnson would have had two weeks to respond before the committee issues its final verdict. He denies intentionally or recklessly misleading Parliament.
