Honors system is corrupt and completely outdated, says SNP MP after Boris Johnson appoints his own father a knighthood
THE revelation that Boris Johnson has nominated his father for a knighthood has sparked a political storm today.
The former prime minister, who was forced out of office amid revelations he attended parties during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic when such gatherings were illegal, is said to have come up with around 100 names for the honors, a list that would have now been reduced to 50.
Rishi Sunak was already under internal pressure to accept the list to make peace in an increasingly restless Tory party, but the Prime Minister came under pressure to drop it altogether today after it emerged that Mr. Johnson had not only nominated his father Stanley for a knighthood, but could potentially trigger two by-elections as Tory MPs are elevated to Lords.
Labor Stephen Kinnock told Sky News: Some of the people on this list, it looks like a carousel of Boris Johnson cronies and frankly the Prime Minister has once again given in because there are warring factions within the Conservative party.
SNP MP Tommy Sheppard said: Boris Johnson has completely laughed at the honors system, just as he has completely laughed at British politics.
His attempt to appoint charlatans like Nadine Dorries, Alister Jack and even his own father to the House of Lords sums up the man’s arrogance and highlights just how corrupt the system is.
Rishi Sunak must remove Boris Johnson’s entire honor roll and do so without delay.
This corrupt and crony-ridden Westminster system, including the honors system, is completely outdated and inadequate.
And with pro-Brexit Labor U-turning on their promise to overhaul the system, there are no signs of sweeping changes in the future.
The prime minister made no comment.
