Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit Bhutan next week

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Bhutan next week at the invitation of Bhutan's King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck. Modi met Bhutanese Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay yesterday in New Delhi who is on a five-day visit to India.

Tobgay is on his first international visit since coming to power in January this year. During the meeting, the two leaders discussed a wide range of economic, trade and strategic issues.

We had productive discussions covering various aspects of our unique and special partnership. I extend my sincere thanks to His Majesty the King of Bhutan and @PMBhutan for inviting me to visit Bhutan next week,” Modi posted on X.

The two leaders likely discussed growing geopolitical concerns over Bhutan-China border negotiations as well as other development projects.

Under Tobgay's leadership, Bhutan announced an economic stimulus package worth Rs 1,500 crore, which will be supported by India to tackle the economic slowdown and support various sectors.

In November, Bhutan and China signed a “cooperation agreement” highlighting the need to demarcate the border between the two countries following their 25th round of border negotiations in Beijing. Recently, China has stepped up its efforts to establish full-fledged diplomatic relations with the Himalayan kingdom. Beijing has tried to claim Doklam. Beijing's attempt to build a road on the Doklam Plateau in 2017 resulted in a standoff between India and China, triggering tensions between the two neighbors.

China and Bhutan do not have diplomatic relations but maintain contact through periodic visits by officials. While Beijing has resolved border disputes with the other 12 neighbors, India and Bhutan are the only two countries that China has yet to sign border agreements.

Recently, Foreign Minister Vinay Mohan Kwatra visited Bhutan and participated in discussions on development partnership, space, energy, trade, technology and people-to-people ties.
