Anwar Gargash tells Turkey to stop meddling in Arab affairs in Libya

UAE Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Dr Anwar Gargash said yesterday that Turkey should stop interfering in Arab affairs, criticizing the comments on Libya by Defense Minister Ankara.

Relationships are not run by threats and there is no room for colonialist delusions these days, Dr Gargash said on Twitter.

The forces of Marshal Khalifa Haftar, based in eastern Libya, are fighting those of the National Accord government in Tripoli, for which Turkey has increased its military and political support.

Turkey sent 3,500 to 3,800 Syrian mercenaries to Libya in the first three months of the year, the US Department of Defense inspector general said in a new report.

The quarterly update on counterterrorism operations in Africa by the Pentagon’s internal watchdog is the first to give details of Turkey’s involvement in the conflict.

He says Ankara paid for and offered citizenship to thousands of mercenaries fighting the Libyan National Army, and that they were likely motivated by money, not ideology.

In January, the UAE’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation condemned a Turkish parliamentary vote that authorized the deployment of troops to Libya to support the GNA.

The vote, which rose from 325 to 184 in an extraordinary session of the Turkish parliament, gave President Recep Tayyip Erdogan a year to decide how to support the GNA militarily.

The resolution said they should be sent for the purpose of eliminate attacks against the interests of Turkey and Libya.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation said Turkey is playing a dangerous role in supporting extremist and terrorist organizations and transporting extremist elements to Libya.

He said Ankaras’ intervention in Libya posed a clear threat to Arab national security and the stability of the Mediterranean region.
