Israel will pay for atrocities in Gaza, Erdoan tells Abbas
Israel will pay for atrocities it committed in the Gaza Strip over the past six months, President Recep Tayyip Erdoan told Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas in a phone call, the director of the communication, Fahrettin Altun.
Erdoan assured that Abbas Trkiye would continue to firmly oppose Israel's barbaric attacks on Gaza, according to Altun.
The war-stricken Gaza Strip has been under an illegal Israeli blockade for 17 years now and months of relentless Israeli attacks, which have killed tens of thousands of people, mostly women and children.
The president stressed that all means, including the UN Security Council resolution, must be deployed for a ceasefire. Israel must be fought with full solidarity, Altun told Turkish public broadcaster TRT Haber.
Separately, the communications director condemned an Israeli airstrike targeting a TRT crew in Gaza, saying the international community must not remain silent in the face of such attacks which embolden Israel.
The Western world must oppose this barbarity and this terrorism as quickly as possible. Israel targets journalists and press freedoms to prevent the broadcast of its massacres, he said.
Erdoan has been one of Israel's most vocal critics since the start of the war on Gaza and a staunch defender of the Palestinian cause, including speaking with Palestinian, Israeli and Hamas officials.
He expressed his full support for Hamas and rejected the Western position of classifying it as a terrorist organization.
Erdoan also called Israel a “terrorist state” and accused it of carrying out “genocide” in Gaza.
At least 33,600 Palestinians, mostly women and children, have been killed and more than 76,000 injured in Israeli attacks amid mass destruction and shortages of basic necessities in Gaza.
Israel is accused of genocide by the International Court of Justice (ICJ), which in an interim ruling in January ordered Tel Aviv to end acts of genocide and take steps to ensure that humanitarian aid is provided to civilians in Gaza.
