Donald Trump's Wildwood rally ushers in economic boom on the Parkway

WILDWOOD, NJ (CBS) – Despite all the people wearing jackets and sweatshirts, the crowded Wildwood Boardwalk felt more like a summer Saturday.

“The memorial weekend came early, I would say, so we love it. It's wonderful,” said Isabel Betancourt, who was at the gathering.

“I almost couldn't get here because the traffic was so heavy from North Wildwood to here,” said Denise Keegan of the national park in New Jersey.

People who didn't have tickets to the rally tried to sneak past Donald Trump through the fences set up on the boardwalk.

Crowds also gathered at Capt'n Jack's house. The bar and restaurant's oceanfront balcony overlooks the stage where Trump spoke.

“It’s like Fourth of July weekend, Labor Day weekend and Memorial Day weekend rolled into one,” said owner Sean Dougherty.

According to Dougherty, a normal Saturday in May is usually slow and he closes early, but the influx of people has been a welcome boom for his bottom line.

“It's a real boost to start paying my bills, my Cisco bill, my food, my liquor bills. It's been a big help,” Dougherty said.

The same can be said at the Salty Anchor. The cooler than normal weather brought many people out the door.

“Yesterday it was also very windy, so everyone is wearing sweatshirts and sweatpants and stuff like that,” Asser Ahmed said.

Wildwood's mayor said he will have an official number in a few days, but expects the economic impact to be in the millions.

Businesses are now hoping for good weather on Memorial Day weekend, two weeks from now.
