Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping: no longer a partnership of equals
Mr. Putin arrived in China cap in hand, eager for Beijing to continue trading with a heavily sanctioned and isolated Russia. His statements were filled with honeyed tones and flattering phrases.
He said his family was learning Mandarin, which was especially notable because he very rarely spoke about his children in public.
He said he and Mr Xi were as close as brothers and went on to praise China's economy, saying it was growing by leaps and bounds and at a rapid pace. That will likely work in favor of officials in Beijing worried about the slowing economy.
But Mr. Xi himself did not echo the tone of these noble compliments. Instead, his remarks were more superficial, even bland. Mr. Putin, he said, was a good friend and a good neighbor. For China, the welcoming ceremony and demonstration of unity are in its interest, but lavishing praise on its host is not.
The costly war in Ukraine, which shows no signs of ending, has altered their relations, exposing weaknesses in the Russian military and its economy. Mr. Xi will know that he is now in charge.
