Jokowi proposes to Elon Musk to build an electric vehicle battery factory in Indonesia
TEMPO.CO, Jakarta – Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs and Investment Luhut Binsar Pandjaitan said President Joko Widodo or Jokowi had asked Tesla CEO Elon Musk to build an electric vehicle battery factory in the country. The offer was conveyed during the president's meeting with the tech mogul during the World Water Forum (WWF) 2024 in Bali.
“We made an offer, [on whether] it is possible to build an EV battery factory here, a precursor to the cathode. And he will think about it,” Luhut said, reported by Reuters today, May 22.
The Indonesian government has been trying for years to convince Tesla to build a dedicated electric vehicle factory, as the country seeks to grow its electric vehicle sector by exploiting domestic nickel resources.
According to the United States Geological Survey (USGS), Indonesia was the world's largest producer of nickel in 2022, with a total production of 3.3 million metric tons (MT). This is an increase of 20.88 percent from 2.73 million tonnes the previous year.
Indonesia contributed 1.6 million tonnes, or about 48.48 percent of global production. Last year, Indonesia's nickel reserves were the largest, at 21 million tonnes, ahead of Australia's 19 million tonnes.
Citing mining-technology.com, GlobalData recorded that Indonesia saw a 13% increase in nickel production in 2021. An additional 4% increase is expected from 2022 to 2026.
