Lok Sabha Elections 2024 | PM Modi's Varanasi among 13 seats to go to polls in Uttar Pradesh on June 1
Lucknow: Thirteen Lok Sabha seats, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Varanasi seat, will go to polls in the final and seventh phase of the general elections on Saturday.
Polling in the state, which sends 80 members to the Lower House of Parliament, took place in all seven phases of the election.
The bypoll for Duddhi (ST) assembly constituency in Sonbhadra district will also be held on Saturday. Six candidates are in the fray for the seat that fell vacant after BJP MP Ram Dular was disqualified following his conviction in a rape case.
The parliamentary seats where polling will take place are Maharajganj, Gorakhpur, Kushinagar, Deoria, Bansgaon (SC), Ghosi, Salempur, Ballia, Ghazipur, Chandauli, Varanasi, Mirzapur and Robertsganj (SC), spread across 11 districts.
Uttar Pradesh is witnessing a direct contest between the BJP-led NDA and the coalition of Indian bloc members, the Samajwadi Party and the Congress. Besides Prime Minister Modi, who is seeking a third term from Varanasi, there are 143 candidates in the fray.
Important Lok Sabha seats include Varanasi, Gorakhpur, which has been represented five times by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, Chandauli, Maharajganj and Mirzapur, from where Union ministers Mahendra Nath Pandey , Pankaj Chaudhary and Anupriya Patel are contesting respectively from Ghazipur from where late Mukhtar Ansari's brother Afzal Ansari is in the fray and Ballia from where former Prime Minister Chandrashekhar's son Neeraj Shekhar is in the fray.
Campaigning for the 13 seats in Uttar Pradesh ended on Thursday evening.
Of the 144 candidates contesting the Lok Sabha polls in this phase, 134 are men and 10 are women. There are 11 general category seats and two SC reserved seats.
Prime Minister Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah and Defense Minister Rajnath Singh were among the key campaigners of the NDA. The INDIA bloc saw Congress leaders, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, as well as Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav and his wife Dimple Yadav, canvassing for alliance candidates, with road shows presentation in Varanasi and Gorakhpur.
While Gandhi contested elections from Rae Barelli in the fifth phase on May 20, Akhilesh Yadav was represented by the SP in Kannauj who went to polls in the fourth phase on May 13 and Dimple Yadav from Mainpuri where the vote took place during the third phase on May 20. May 7.
During the campaign, the BJP claimed that the INDIA bloc would introduce Muslim reservation and put the 'Babri lock' on the Ram temple in Ayodhya, if voted to power. The opposition alliance urged people not to vote for the BJP in order to “save” the Constitution and democracy.
The BJP's main allies, NISHAD Party and Om Prakash Rajbhar's SBSP, have candidates in this phase. Anupriya Patel of ally Apna Dal (Sonelal) is seeking re-election.
Mayawati's BSP has also fielded candidates, including in Varanasi and Gorakhpur.
Voting will take place on Saturday from 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. in all seats.
