Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's conviction for leaking state secrets overturned

A Pakistan high court has overturned the conviction for leaking state secrets of former Prime Minister Imran Khan, who remains in prison on other charges.

Shah Mehmood Qureshi, who served as Khan's foreign minister during his tenure from 2018 to 2022, was also acquitted of charges against him on Monday local time.

Khan, 71, had been sentenced to 10 years in prison by a lower court for publicizing a classified cable sent to Islamabad by Pakistan's ambassador to Washington in 2022.

He had presented the code as evidence that the United States had conspired to force him from power in 2022, when a vote of no confidence saw him replaced by the opposition.

The American and Pakistani military have denied this accusation.

The ruling by a two-member bench of the Islamabad High Court was announced by Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, according to an AFP court reporter.

Salman Safdar, the lawyer for Khan's Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, told AFP outside court that the case was politically motivated against Khan.

“This is the first major case as part of political victimization against Imran Khan and Shah Mahmood Qureshi which has been dismissed,” he said.

Khan remains imprisoned and sentenced to seven years in prison for breaking Islamic law by marrying his wife Bushra Bibi too soon after their divorce.

He was also convicted of corruption over gifts he received while serving as prime minister between 2018 and 2022.

Although his 14-year sentence was suspended in April, the sentence still stands.

Khan was ousted by a parliamentary vote of no confidence after falling out with top generals, and in opposition he waged an unprecedented campaign against them.

Khan subsequently became embroiled in more than 200 court cases, significantly complicating his return attempts.
