Latinos for Trump renamed to add Americans to his name

Latinos for Trump renamed to add Americans to his name

Latinos for Trump no longer exist. Now, it is Latin Americans who support Trump.

The Trump campaign changed the name of its Latino outreach effort to emphasize American citizenship. The shift is particularly striking given that the campaign continues to gain traction among Hispanic voters, even as former President Donald J. Trump steps up his use of dehumanizing rhetoric about immigrants that is central to his campaign.

It's very important that we all understand that no matter where we come from, we are already American, said Jaime Florez, Hispanic communications director for the Republican National Committee and the Trump campaign. Whether you are African-American, Latino-American, Asian-American, European-American, wherever you come from, we are all Americans.

Latino is a primarily American term used to refer to people with family in Latin America. By the broadest definition, this can include people whose roots can be traced to the Spanish settlers of New Mexico, third- and fourth-generation Salvadoran Americans, and newcomers from Venezuela. Latinos are generally considered an ethnicity and can include people who appear white, black, indigenous, or Asian. Polls have repeatedly shown that many Latinos prefer to identify themselves by their country of origin.

Emphasizing an American identity alongside a Latino identity is highly unlikely to deter potential Trump voters. Of course, by law, only U.S. citizens can vote in federal elections. (Mr. Trump and his supporters have repeatedly made unfounded accusations about undocumented immigrant voting.)

This new label allows the campaign to attract Latino supporters drawn to Mr. Trump precisely because they fervently believe in his description of the American dream. Many of these voters say they support Mr. Trump because they believe their own economic situation was better when he was in office. Many Latino voters also expressed alarm at the arrival of new migrants; some explicitly stated that these migrants threatened the social status of Latinos already living in the United States.

Latino voters are expected to make up about 15 percent of eligible voters this year and will likely play a central role in determining elections. Polls show that support for Mr. Trump among Latino voters has increased since his defeat in 2020; Some polls show him winning more than 40 percent of those voters, a level not seen for a Republican presidential candidate in two decades.

Ian Haney Lpez, a law professor at the University of California at Berkeley who has written extensively on Latinos and worked with Democratic groups, called the shift of Latinos to Trump a strategically smart move that plays into the divide among Hispanic voters.

It builds a border wall across Latino communities, allowing some to feel valued as Americans while encouraging them to believe that others don't belong, as immigrants of the wrong type , did he declare. This change also takes Latinos back 100 years.

Mr. Haney Lpez highlighted advocacy groups that emerged nearly a century ago, such as the League of United Latin American Citizens, which were created to counter anti-Latino prejudice and uplift Latinos who were citizens, but who also denigrated more recent Hispanic arrivals.

It took decades of work, particularly during the civil rights era, to build a sense of humanity and shared identity across the divide between citizens and immigrants, he said. But of course, this divide still remains susceptible to weaponization today, and that is what the rebranding of Latin Americans to Trump seeks to do.

In a statement, Julie Chavez Rodriguez, Biden's campaign manager, called the name change an insult to Latino voters, saying Mr. Trump had spent his entire adult life vilifying Latinos and that his entire time in power had worsened the situation of our communities.

Danielle Alvarez, a spokeswoman for the Trump campaign, rejected criticism of the name change and said the campaign's focus was on the economy and the cost of living for all Americans.

The left is out there pandering to minority groups and talking about process, Ms. Alvarez said. We will deliver the message “America First” to all Americans, including Latin Americans.
