Venezuela signs gold deal with Turkey in region hit by illegal mines
Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has signed a deal with Turkey to mine gold in his country's south, where large areas have been devastated by illegal mining.
“Turkey's investment aims to continue the development of gold (in) the (Orinoco) mining arc,” Maduro said, referring to a region rich in gold, iron, coltan and other minerals , which have been the subject of illicit extractions.
“We are going to develop these gold deposits and I wish you good luck so that what we sign (…) becomes an example of ecological development, respectful of nature and very productive,” declared the left leader during the signing Friday. .
Activists have long denounced an “ecocide” in the southern region of this South American country.
Authorities say illegal miners have cut down and burned trees, contaminated rivers and carried out underground drilling that has harmed the environment as well as indigenous communities.
On Friday, Maduro also signed agreements with Turkey regarding the construction of an ammonia refinery and the exploitation of gas reserves.
“These are three big projects for the future for petrochemicals, gas and gold,” said Maduro, campaigning for the July 28 presidential election.
Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is expected to visit Venezuela this year, but no date has been announced.
Erdogan visited the country in December 2018 to support Maduro after the United States and several European countries disavowed the Venezuelan leader's re-election due to accusations of fraud.
