Imran Khan's wife approaches Islamabad High Court seeking suspension of sentence in iddat case

Islamabad [Pakistan], June 8 (ANI): Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's wife Bushra Bibi has moved the Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking suspension of her sentence in the iddat case, Geo reported News, based in Pakistan. Bushra Bibi registered the petition through her lawyer Salman Safdar. According to the petition, the hearing of his appeal against the conviction is underway. Criticizing Bushra Bibi's “prolonged incarceration”, the petition highlighted her right to have her sentence suspended, according to the Geo News report. The plea reads: “It is imperative to decide on the suspension of the applicant’s sentence [Bushra] as soon as possible in the interests of justice. “Earlier in February, Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi were each sentenced to seven years in prison after a trial court ruled their marriage fraudulent after Bushra Bibi's ex-husband Khawar Maneka contacted the court against their marriage, pointing out that it was solemnized during her iddat period, in his 51-page verdict, the judge said their marriage reflected dishonesty and also imposed a fine of 500,000 Pakistani Rupees (PKR) each, for which non-payment carries additional provisions of four months of incarceration, Geo News reported.

After the court's verdict, the couple appealed their conviction to a district court and a sessions court. However, the case was transferred to Additional District and Sessions Judge Muhammad Afzal Majuka after Maneka expressed defiance in Justice Shahrukh Arjumand. The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf criticized the development, calling it a “deliberate delay in delivery of justice”, Geo News reported. In the statement, the PTI central committee said that Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi deserve to be immediately released from jail. The party alleged that the pace of trials against the duo was “deliberately delayed” by postponing hearings with delayed dates. In her plea, Imran Khan's wife complained of “miserable conditions” during her incarceration in Adiala jail and “political victimization”. against her and Imran Khan. The petition highlighted conflicting and untenable evidence and added that it could not form a basis for conviction. The petition reads: “The petitioner has no previous convictions and is prepared to furnish sureties to the entire satisfaction of this Hon. court for his release,” Geo News reported. Earlier, Bushra Bibi had approached the District and Sessions Court, Islamabad, seeking an early hearing on her appeals filed against her conviction in the iddat case.
