Iraqi PM sees potential in linking Belt and Road projects and development roads

Shafaq News/Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani said on Sunday that it is possible to link the Belt and Road Initiative with the development road project to create a single project, noting that the Chinese company PetroChina offered to cooperate in this endeavor.
Turkey, Iraq, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates recently launched an initiative to establish a new trade corridor linking the Gulf to Europe. This road is called the Development Road and is the last economic corridor in the region after China's Belt and Road Initiative and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor.
The project, which was launched during Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's visit to Baghdad on April 22, is expected to cost $20 billion, with the bulk of financial support coming from Doha and Abu Dhabi.
In a meeting with Houliang Dai, PetroChina's executive director for the Middle East, al-Sudani said that “the Belt and Road Initiative can be linked with the development road project to create a single project , and this is what the company offered to cooperate in.”
He expressed Iraq's willingness to partner with the company in petrochemical projects outside the country and for the government to adopt environmental standards in the implementation of the projects, while providing an environment of investment to operating companies, developing and establishing training centers for worker development and cooperation. in the field of scholarships.
Al-Sudani expressed his country's desire to develop relations with China in all areas and that the presence of Chinese companies in various sectors, including the oil sector, reinforces this trend. He highlighted the associated gas project that he inaugurated yesterday in the governorate of Maysan, and implemented by PetroChina, as one of the strategic projects between the two countries, because it is part of the government's priorities in material to stop waste in the form of gas flaring.
The Prime Minister explained Iraq's interest in developing gas projects, as part of the government's program to develop the manufacturing industry and fertilizer industry, which will add value to the economy and create employment opportunities. He added that the government will offer sites to companies, especially PetroChina, pointing out that the integrated energy implementation project will be proposed, which includes oil production, associated gas, processing plants, power plant and a petrochemical refinery.
