Narendra Modi sworn in as Indian Prime Minister for third term
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi was sworn in for a third term on Sunday after worse-than-expected election results left him dependent on coalition partners to govern.
Modi, flanked by officials from his Hindu nationalist party and leaders of his coalition members, vowed at a ceremony marking his formal ascension to power to “bear true allegiance to the constitution of India.”
Modi's Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party has ruled decisively for the past decade, but failed to repeat its two previous landslide victories this time around, defying the expectations of analysts and exit polls .
He was instead forced to enter into rapid negotiations with the National Democratic Alliance, a 15-member coalition, to assemble the parliamentary numbers needed to govern.
Honor guards lined the steps of the presidential palace and a military band played as he took the oath of office.
But with Modi yet to announce his new cabinet, the line of lawmakers also taking the oath of office has been closely watched for who will be part of the government.
Modi was immediately followed by top BJP aides Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah and Nitin Gadkari, ministers of defence, home and transport respectively in his last government.
The major coalition parties demanded heavy concessions in return for their support.
Modi described the past few days as “very busy” in a post on his website ahead of the ceremony on Sunday, saying he was “in the middle of preparations for government formation.”
Wearing a flowing, bright white kurta shirt and pants, Modi was the first of several ministers and deputy ministers sworn in by President Droupadi Murmu in a ceremony attended by several thousand people.
The crowd included adoring BJP loyalists, as well as South Asian leaders, Bollywood celebrities such as legend Shahrukh Khan and billionaire tycoons Gautam Adani and Mukesh Ambani, Modi's main allies.
