Indian Prime Minister Modi unveils coalition cabinet dominated by his party
NEW DELHI: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled his coalition government on Monday (June 10) after a surprise electoral setback saw his Hindu nationalist party lose an absolute majority.
All 71 members of his government were sworn in after Modi on Sunday, and 11 posts went to coalition allies who snatched them up in exchange for their support – including five among the government's top 30 posts.
But the old guard of Modi's Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) dominates the list, with key positions unchanged, reflecting broad political continuity.
This includes BJP loyalists Rajnath Singh, Amit Shah, Nitin Gadkari, Nirmala Sitharaman and S Jaishankar – ministers of Defence, Home, Transport, Finance and Foreign Affairs respectively, retaining their posts.
Powerful BJP president Jagat Prakash Nadda has been appointed health minister.
The posts allocated to the coalition leaders include civil aviation, as well as Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu of the Telugu Desam Party (TDP), the BJP's biggest ally.
Other coalition positions include smaller ministries such as heavy industry, agribusiness and fisheries.
There are no Muslim MPs among his candidates for a third term, unlike his two previous governments, both formed after his right-wing party, the BJP, won a majority.
Modi's decade as prime minister saw him cultivate an image as an aggressive champion of the country's majority Hindu faith, worrying minorities including the country's Muslim community, which numbers more than 200 million.
“Honored to serve Bharat,” Modi wrote after taking the oath, using the country’s name in Sanskrit, a word dating back to ancient Hindu scriptures.
He held his first Cabinet meeting on Monday evening, during which plans to help create 30 million new homes for poor families were approved.
Modi had been forced to engage in rapid negotiations with coalition partners the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), whose 293 seats guaranteed him the number of parliamentarians needed to govern.
