PM Modi unlikely to heed RSS chief's advice on Manipur: Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi

Congress MP from East Assams Jorhat Gaurav Gogoi on June 11 said he did not expect Prime Minister Narendra Modi to heed Rastriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) chief's advice ), Mohan Bhagwats, on Manipur marked by conflict.

Speaking in public for the first time after the Lok Sabha election results on June 4, the RSS chief said the new government at the Center should forget election rhetoric and focus on issues across the country. He stressed the need to resolve the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur which erupted on May 3, 2023.

I don't expect PM Modi to pay heed to RSS chief Mohan Bhagwat's words. Prime Minister Modi will avoid Manipur, misuse law enforcement and try to circumvent the Indian Constitution, Mr. Gogoi posted on X.

Fortunately, the people have chosen the INDIA alliance to speak on their behalf and defend the Indian Parliament and the Constitution, he added.

In Manipur capital Imphal, the state Congress unit condemned the ambush of Chief Minister Nongthombam Biren Singh's advance convoy near Kotlen village along National Highway 37 on June 10 .

Terming the incident unfortunate, former chief minister Okram Ibobi Singh said it indicated that the state government had completely lost control of the law and order situation. The government has failed to protect lives and properties across the state, he said.

Instead of displacing villagers, security forces should focus on protecting civilian lives and property, he added.

Meanwhile, a Rongmei Naga community organization has warned Kuki groups against imposing a total shutdown of NH37 from June 10 midnight.

The entire stretch of NH37 from Imphal to Jiribam is ancestral land of Rongmei Naga, despite the claims of the Kukis, who are new settlers, said a statement issued by the Rongmei Naga Students' Organization in Manipur.
