Donald Trump says he will work alongside anti-abortion group

Former President Donald Trump said Monday that if re-elected, he plans to work alongside a newly formed religious organization that says abortion is the greatest atrocity facing the United States and should be completely eradicated.

During a two-minute recorded speech broadcast at the Danbury Institute's first Life & Liberty forum in Indianapolis, Trump avoided using the word abortion but said he hoped to protect innocent lives if re-elected in November.

We must defend religious freedom, free speech, innocent life and the heritage and tradition that made America the greatest nation in the history of the world, Trump said. But today, as you know, we are a nation in decline.

Trump, the presumptive Republican Party nominee for president, said he hopes to work alongside the institute to uphold those values.

These will be your years because you're going to make a comeback like no other group, Trump said. I know what's going on. I know where you come from and where you are going. And I will be with you side by side.

Trump also called on the Danbury Institute and church members to vote for him in the November presidential election, saying President Joe Biden and Democrats are against religion.

Biden-Harris 2024 spokeswoman Sarafina Chitika said in a written statement released before Trump's message was released that a second term for him would certainly result in more extreme bans on abortion with no exceptions, women punished for seeking the care they need and criminalized doctors for providing. care.

Women can and will stop it by re-electing President Biden and Vice President Harris this November, Chitika wrote.

Abortion station

The Danbury Institute writes on its website that it opposes abortion at conception, meaning that every unborn baby would have the same legal protection as those born into it.

The intentional and premeditated killing of an unborn child should be addressed within the framework of laws already in place regarding homicide, its website states. We also support strengthening the foster care system and encouraging Christian adoption and work with churches across the country to help equip them to care for children who need loving families.

Another section of the Danbury Institute website states that, according to the organization, the greatest atrocity facing our generation today is the practice of abortion, the sacrifice of children on the altar of self.

Abortion must stop, the website says. We will not rest until it is completely eradicated.

The website does not specify whether the organization supports exceptions in cases of rape, incest or the life of the woman, or whether women who have abortions should be protected from criminal prosecution. The institute did not respond to States Newsroom's request seeking clarification on whether it supports any or all of these three exceptions.

The institute writes on its website that it does not support any candidate for public office and does not participate in any political campaign activities. Contributions to the Danbury Institute are not used for political campaign purposes and are conducted in accordance with IRS regulations for nonprofit organizations.

Florida minister challenges abortion letter

Tom Ascol, president of Founders Ministries in Florida, spoke at a panel discussion at the “Sanctity of Life Monday” event, during which he said abortion is the greatest evil of this nation today.

Ascol also appeared frustrated by a public letter released by dozens of anti-abortion organizations in May 2022, arguing that no laws should criminalize women who have abortions. He particularly objected to the fact that the acting chairman of the Ethics and Religious Liberty Commission of the Southern Baptist Conventions signed his name to the document.

It saddens me that while legislation was before the Louisiana Legislature and had a real opportunity to pass, because there were legislators willing to move forward, 75 organizations pro-lifers wrote an open letter, including the head of our Ethics and Religion group. Liberty Commission Brent Leatherwood, who attached his name to the letter, said: “We do not believe that any legislature should criminalize abortion to the extent that those who offer their bodies for abortion would be required responsible,” Ascol said during the press conference. conference.

This letter was released on the same day in 2022 that Louisiana state lawmakers were debating House Bill 813, which was poised to criminalize women who have abortions in addition to the doctors who perform them. Prosecutors could have charged the women with murder.

Louisiana lawmakers instead opted to rework the language of the original bill to replace it with another anti-abortion measure that did not include criminal penalties for women who have abortions.

Ascol said he believes the Southern Baptist Conventions Commission on Ethics and Religious Liberty should publicly state whether the goal (is) the abolition of abortion. And if that's the case and they're sincere, then okay, let's work together.

If we can do that, I think we can have an opportunity to build a coalition, Ascol said. If we receive more open letters from so-called pro-life organizations helping to advance legitimate legislation, then I think we will continue to see fragmentation and that is understandable.

National Right to Life, Susan B. Anthony List and Americans United for Life were among the organizations that signed the May 2022 letter.

Trump and abortion, contraception

Trump's comments at the Danbury Institute on Monday did not clear up the confusion stemming from his comments to news organizations in recent months.

Trump said in an interview with TIME Magazine published in April that his campaign would release a policy within weeks on access to medication abortion, a two-drug regimen approved up to 10 weeks of gestation.

Well, I have an opinion about it, but I'm not going to explain it, Trump said, according to the interview transcript. I'm not going to say it yet. But I have some pretty strong opinions on this. And I'll probably post it next week.

This policy had not been published as of Monday.

Medical abortion, which includes mifepristone and misoprostol, accounts for about 63 percent of pregnancy terminations in the United States, according to data from the Guttmacher Institute.

U.S. Supreme Court justices heard oral arguments in a case involving the use of mifepristone in late March and are expected to release their decision before July 4.

During an interview with a Pittsburgh news station in May, Trump suggested he might be open to states limiting or banning access to contraception, although he walked back his remarks the same day in a post on social networks.

We're looking at that and I'm going to have a policy on that very shortly and I think that's something you'll find interesting, Trump said on KDKA after being asked if he could support any restrictions on the right of a person to contraception. This is another very interesting question. But you will find him very intelligent. I think it's a smart decision, but we'll release it very soon.

Trump later posted on social media that he had never advocated and would never advocate imposing restrictions on birth control or other contraceptives.

The Trump campaign had not released a policy on contraception as of Monday.

US Senate vote on IVF will take place this week

Access to reproductive health care, including contraception and IVF, has become a recurring issue in the U.S. Senate ahead of the November elections, with Democrats seeking to formally enroll members of the Republican Party.

The Senate attempted to pass legislation last week that would have provided protections for access to contraception, but the vast majority of Republican chambers voted against moving the bill forward.

Access to contraception is currently protected by two U.S. Supreme Court cases, Griswold v. Connecticut and Eisenstadt v. Baird, in which the justices ruled that Americans' privacy rights allowed them to make these decisions for themselves.

Democrats and reproductive rights advocates fear the justices could eventually overturn these two cases in the same way the court overturned Roe v. Wade.

The Senate is expected to vote this week on legislation guaranteeing access to in vitro fertilization, although Republican senators are also expected to block that bill.
