Jokowi inspects new capital, launches projects
On June 4-5, 2024, President Joko Widodo inspected the development progress of the New Capital (IKN) and held groundbreaking ceremonies for the sixth phase of the project. He also reviewed preparations for the 79th anniversary of the Republic of Indonesia, which is expected to be celebrated at IKN. Currently, the first phase of construction of IKN is 80% complete, and its finalization is expected soon.
President Widodo inaugurated the Sepaku Semoi Dam, one of the key projects of the first phase of the IKN. The dam, costing IDR 836 billion and with a capacity of 16 million cubic meters, will serve as a crucial source of drinking water for the IKN. Additionally, he laid the foundation stones of the Astra Biz Center-IKN and the Nusantara Botanical Garden. The Astra Biz Center-IKN aims to stimulate local economic growth and serve as a service center for 11 Astra Group brands. The Nusantara Botanical Garden, spanning 211 hectares, will become an educational and tourist destination in the new capital.
President Widodo highlighted the importance of investments for the future of IKN and called for accelerated development of infrastructure such as toll roads and airports to support accessibility. He highlighted the critical role of current investments in realizing Indonesia's capital development vision.
In the education sector, Gunadarma University became the first university established in IKN, partnering with various international universities to offer doctoral programs. Indonesia is also collaborating with Al Azhar Summarecon and Bina Bangsa International Schools, which use the Cambridge curriculum, to improve the quality of children's education.
In addition, President Widodo launched the construction of 10 roads around IKN, totaling 50.9 kilometers and costing IDR 561 billion. On December 20, 2023, he unveiled the Nusantara Superblock project, valued at IDR 3 trillion. The new capital also saw the completion of the Indonesian national football team's training center, funded by the government and FIFA. These projects aim to attract more investors to participate in the development of the new capital, the engine of Indonesia's economic and social progress.
