Journalist Imran Riaz 'arrested' at Lahore airport

Presenter Imran Riaz Khan was apprehended at Lahore airport early Wednesday as he left for Saudi Arabia for the Hajj pilgrimage, his lawyer Azhar Siddique said.

“He was arrested by unidentified individuals accompanied by law enforcement,” Siddique revealed, noting that a fight occurred during the incident.

“Imran Riaz has been granted bail in all the cases registered against him,” the anchor’s lawyer said.

Following this, Siddique filed a petition in the Lahore High Court (LHC) seeking clarification on the first information report (FIR) under which Riaz was detained. The petition is pending before a court for hearing.

According to the petition filed, Riaz was about to leave for Hajj when “several plainclothes officers from different authorities arrived and arrested him without explanation” and then “transferred him to an undisclosed location.”

“No information has been provided regarding the FIR used for the arrest of the applicant on the night of 11.06.2024, therefore it is necessary for the respondents to appear before this court and reveal what FIRs were lodged against the applicant, leading to his illegal arrest. and arbitrary arrest,” he said.

The petition also mentioned that Riaz's name was removed from the Exit Control List (ECL) on Tuesday.

The plea asked the court to accept the petition and direct the police, the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA), the home secretary and the anti-corruption establishment to submit the details of the FIR under which the presenter was apprehended.

On June 3, Imran Riaz was allegedly prevented from boarding a flight to the Hajj pilgrimage at Islamabad airport. Imran then decided to take the matter to court.

Earlier this year, Riaz was arrested in a corruption case relating to the Dhrabi Lake contract in Chakwal and was later released on bail by a special court. However, he was re-arrested in another case related to violence outside PTI founder Imran Khan's Zaman Park residence.

On March 10, an anti-terrorism court granted him bail after his arrest against sureties worth Rs 200,000.
