Amid J&K militant attacks, PM Modi chairs review meeting, directs deployment of comprehensive counter-terrorism capabilities | News from India
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday chaired a meeting to review the security situation in Jammu and Kashmir, during which he was briefed on the anti-terrorism efforts being undertaken in the Union Territory.
The meeting follows four militant attacks in three days in the region.
In the meeting attended by the National Security Advisor and other officials, Modi was given a comprehensive overview of the security situation in J&K. He was also informed of the efforts undertaken by the local administration.
The prime minister ordered officials to deploy the full range of India's counterterrorism capabilities to handle the situation. Modi also spoke to Union Home Minister Amit Shah and discussed deployment of security forces and counter-terrorism operations.
PM Modi also spoke to J&K LG Manoj Sinha and took stock of the situation in the UT.
An overnight gun battle in Jammu and Kashmir's Kathua district ended on Wednesday after a second militant holed up in a village was killed and a CRPF jawan lost his life, police said.
Hours later, in Kota Top area of Doda district near Gandoh, a special police officer was injured after a joint team of police and paramilitary forces came under fire from militants. This was the fourth such incident in Jammu since Sunday, when a pilgrimage bus was attacked.
Police and security forces have now raised alert in Jammu province and have also intensified operations against militants who they say are on the run and have carried out attacks in Reasi, Kathua and Doda to divert the attention of Rajouri and Poonch districts.
