Judge Athar Minallah did not visit Imran Khan in prison

Pakistani social media users are sharing a video that purportedly shows Supreme Court Justice Athar Minallah visiting former Prime Minister Imran Khan in jail, after Khan complained about being denied the facilities he was entitled to.

The statement is false. The video predates Khan's arrest.

Claim

On June 1, a social media user posted a 26-second video on X, formerly known as Twitter, that shows government vehicles entering Rawalpindi Central Prison, where Khan has been detained since August.

The footage then shows Judge Athar Minallah speaking to prison officials.

The voiceover claims that Minallah's visit follows Khan's complaint to the Supreme Court on May 30 over the military's alleged control of the prison. To date, this article has been viewed over 30,000 times, reposted over 200 times, and liked over 600 times.

Officials from the Supreme Court of Pakistan and Rawalpindi Central Prison refute Justice Athar Minallah's recent visit to the prison. The video in question dates from 2022, unrelated to Khan's imprisonment.

Dr Shahid Hussain Kamboyo, the Supreme Court's public relations officer, has termed allegations about Justice Minallah's visit on June 1 “false”, saying Minallah was in Karachi that day and not Islamabad.

Moreover, Asad Javed Warraich, the prison superintendent, also told Geo TV reporter Shabbir Dar over phone that there was no such thing.

A reverse image search confirmed the origin of the video in 2022 when Justice Minallah, then Chief Justice of the Islamabad High Court, visited Rawalpindi Central Jail with two other judges after the National Human Rights Commission submitted a report on torture in detention.
