Most US voters think Trump's criminal trials are politically motivated

More than half of Americans, and nearly all Republicans, believe Donald Trump's recently concluded trial in New York was politically motivated, a sign that the former president's felony conviction will not harm his White House bid .

The new Monmouth University poll, the first major investigation since he was convicted on 34 counts last month, found that 57 percent of all voters and 93 percent of Republicans thought the New York hush money case against Trump was motivated by political rather than legal considerations.

Just under half of voters and nearly two-thirds of Democrats also said the Justice Department's decision to prosecute Hunter Biden on federal gun-related charges was also politically motivated. Hunter Biden this week became the first child of a US president to be convicted of a crime. Both he and Trump are awaiting sentencing.

The Monmouth poll, one of the first major polls released since the convictions of Trump and Hunter Biden, highlights both the partisan divide within the electorate and the limited impact the verdicts had on voters.

Trump and his allies have repeatedly accused Democrats of using the justice system as a weapon against him for political reasons. But he also used his legal problems to raise money to finance his re-election, selling images of his police mugshots from criminal charges in Georgia and declaring himself a political prisoner.

He still faces three criminal trials related to his efforts to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and his manipulation of classified documents.

The Monmouth poll, released Thursday, reveals that voters' intentions have barely budged since Trump's trial in Manhattan. Just over four in 10 registered voters nationwide said they would definitely or probably vote for President Joe Biden, with similar numbers for Trump.

The results have remained virtually unchanged since Monmouth began asking the question last fall.

On Wednesday, a Reuters/Ipsos survey found that 80% of registered voters said Hunter Biden's conviction on gun-related criminal charges would not affect their likelihood of voting for Joe Biden.

Most polls now show Trump and Biden in a tight race, leaving the election likely decided by a small fraction of the electorate in a handful of swing states.

Hunter Biden also faces a separate trial over tax charges in California, which is set to begin just two months before Election Day.
