PM Modi leaves for Italy to attend G7 outreach session; AI, energy and Africa must be the focus
New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday left New Delhi for Brindisi in southern Italy to attend the awareness sessions that the G7 would organize on the sidelines of its 50th summit.
This is his first foreign visit after taking office as Prime Minister for a third consecutive term.
He may have bilateral meetings with French President Emmanuel Macron, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida on the sidelines of the summit. He could also have bilateral meetings with US President Joe Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
I am pleased that my first visit during my third consecutive term will be to Italy for the G7 summit. I fondly remember my visit to Italy for the G20 summit in 2021, Modi said in a statement before leaving New Delhi.
He will also have a bilateral meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, host of the G7 summit and associated outreach events.
Modi noted that Meloni's two visits to New Delhi last year helped infuse momentum and depth into the bilateral agenda of India and Italy. We remain committed to consolidating the India-Italy strategic partnership and strengthening cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean regions, the Prime Minister said of New Delhi's growing ties with Rome.
India is not a member of the G7, but Indian leaders have attended awareness sessions at the bloc's summits.
G7 awareness sessions this year will focus on artificial intelligence, energy, Africa and the Mediterranean. This will be an opportunity to bring greater synergy between the outcomes of the G20 Summit organized under Indian Chairmanship and the upcoming G7 Summit and deliberate on crucial issues for the South, the Prime Minister said.
Modi is likely to call for a global framework for the ethical use of artificial intelligence during his speech Friday to G7 leaders in Puglia, Italy.
