Trump asked Mike Johnson to help 'overturn' conviction: report

The former president is working directly with congressional Republicans to undermine his belief in secrecy.

Donald Trump may be the first U.S. president convicted of a crime, but he has no plans to let his conviction stand — and he's appealing to congressional Republicans to help him undermine the case.

According to a report from Politico, shortly after his conviction on May 31, an enraged Trump called House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and treated him to expletive-filled rants about the verdict.

“We have to turn this around,” Trump reportedly said between two F-bombs.

Johnson – already in a precarious position with some hard-liners in his party – has tried to thwart efforts to oust him by positioning himself as a close ally of the former president. Johnson was one of several House Republicans who made the pilgrimage to Manhattan to blast the lawsuit on Trump's behalf, and the recently reported phone call likely set the tone for Johnson's public statements following the verdict.

The House speaker told Fox News shortly after the sentencing that he thought “the Supreme Court should intervene” on the issue of Trump's criminal verdict. “I think the judges on the court – I know a lot of them personally – I think they are deeply concerned about this, as are we. So I think they’re going to set the record straight,” Johnson said. “This will be canceled, guys, there’s no doubt about it; it's just going to take time to do it.

As Rolling Stone previously reported, Trump has been pressuring House Republicans to pass legislation that would effectively protect presidents – current and former – from non-federal prosecution. Trump will visit the Capitol on Thursday to speak with Republican lawmakers about his plans for a second term.
