Prime Minister Narendra Modi will visit Italy on Thursday to attend the annual G7 summit of advanced economies. Foreign Minister Vinay Kwatra on Wednesday said Prime Minister Modi's participation in the 2024 G7 summit provides an opportunity to follow up on the outcomes of last year's G20 summit, hosted by India.

Summit location

The G7 summit will take place June 13-15 in the luxury resort of Borgo Egnazia in Italy's Puglia region. The discussions are expected to focus on the ongoing war in Ukraine and the conflict in Gaza.

Leaders present

Prominent leaders at the summit include US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is also expected to attend a session on the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
“We have always maintained that dialogue and diplomacy are the best option to resolve the problem,” Kwatra said when asked about the Ukrainian conflict.

Key focus areas

During the summit, Prime Minister Modi will address several crucial topics:

  1. Africa, climate change and development: The summit will begin with discussions on these important issues, highlighting their importance to the Global South and India's development goals.
  2. Conflict in the Middle East and Ukraine: Ongoing conflicts in these regions are expected to dominate the agenda as leaders explore solutions to these complex geopolitical challenges.
  3. Artificial Intelligence (AI): AI will be a key topic, reflecting India's growing focus on its applications and potential.
  4. Global Challenges: Modi will collaborate with other leaders on pressing international issues, demonstrating India's commitment to cooperation and solving global problems.

Bilateral meetings with the Italian Prime Minister

Prime Minister Modi will hold talks with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, marking their second meeting since Meloni's visit to India in March 2023. Foreign Minister Vinay Mohan Kwatra said: “Their last meeting took place during the COP28 summit in Abu Dhabi in December 2023. » Discussions will focus on bilateral relations and plan future collaboration.

Participation in awareness sessions

On June 14, Modi will participate in the awareness session, focusing on AI, energy, Africa and the Mediterranean. Foreign Minister Kwatra said: “This summit will focus on artificial intelligence (AI), energy, Africa and the Mediterranean, where G7 countries and relevant countries will share their views. »

Monitoring the G20 results

Modi's participation in the G7 summit will also allow him to follow up on the outcomes of last year's G20 summit hosted by India. Kwatra stressed that “the Prime Minister's participation in the G7 summit provides a timely opportunity to follow up on the outcomes of the G20 summit and discuss issues concerning the Global South.”

Engage with global leaders

The summit offers Modi a chance to engage with other world leaders on issues important to India and the Global South. This will also provide opportunities for bilateral meetings with G7 leaders. Kwatra added, “On the sidelines of the G7 in Italy, Prime Minister Modi is expected to hold bilateral meetings with G7 leaders, outreach countries and international organizations.”

India's continued engagement at the G7

This is India's 11th participation in the G7 summit and Modi's fifth consecutive participation. Italy, which chairs the G7 this year, is hosting the summit, attended by Canada, France, Germany, Japan, the United Kingdom and the United States, as well as the European Union. G7 Summit agenda includes Russia-Ukraine conflict, Middle East issues, relations with developing countries, migration, links between climate energy, food security and artificial intelligence .

The foreign minister said India's regular participation in the G7 summit reflects growing recognition of New Delhi's efforts to address global challenges.
