Turkey and Spain will work together for peace between Israel and Palestine, Erdogan says in Madrid
ISTANBUL
Turkey and Spain will continue to work together to help bring peace between Israelis and Palestinians, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said on Thursday.
“Permanent peace and an uninterrupted flow of aid are our priorities,” Erdogan said at a news conference in Madrid alongside Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez.
“Prime Minister Sanchez has greatly contributed to awakening the world's conscience regarding the atrocities committed in Gaza,” he said, thanking the Prime Minister for his “wise stance towards Gaza and the Spanish people for their support”.
For his part, Sánchez said that Turkey and Spain share an “urgent and imperative” desire for a ceasefire and humanitarian aid in the Palestinian enclave as well as the release of Israeli hostages who are detained there.
Erdogan also welcomed Spain's recent decision to recognize Palestine as a state, saying it was “of the utmost importance and should serve as an example to other countries.”
“Members of the UN Security Council should support a ceasefire decision and exert the necessary pressure on Israel,” he said.
Erdogan also thanked Madrid for supporting Turkey's EU accession process.
“Spain is one of our friends who best understands Turkey's contributions to the EU and has supported our accession process from the beginning,” he said.
Sanchez, meanwhile, stressed that Spain and Turkey share a “clear and determined” commitment to peace in Ukraine and Palestine, strengthening the rules-based international order.
Erdogan also addressed the war between Russia and Ukraine, saying:
“I reiterated to Spanish Prime Minister Sanchez that a just, comprehensive and permanent peace in Ukraine is only possible through dialogue.”
The Turkish president also said he and Sanchez discussed “the growing threat of Islamophobia and xenophobia in Europe,” expressing growing concerns about growing support for far-right parties in Europe's recent European elections. .
