Turkey signs deal with US to buy F-16 fighter jets

Turkey and the United States have signed a contract for the sale of F-16 warplanes after Washington gave the green light to a $23 billion deal following months of negotiations, officials said on June 13. sources from the Turkish Ministry of Defense.
“The contract has been signed and delegations from both parties are negotiating the details,” the ministry sources said.
Under the deal, Turkey will receive 40 new F-16s and upgrade 79 aircraft from its existing fleet.
The State Department last week hailed “a major step forward” in Turkey's purchase of new F-16 fighter jets, calling them “the most advanced F-16s ever made available only to Closest allies and partners.”
“Just the latest example of the United States' enduring commitment to a security partnership with Turkey,” he said in a social media post.
As required by law, the State Department notified Congress of the deal in January, along with the separate sale of 40 F-35s to Greece for $8.6 billion.
The United States only gave the green light to the transaction after Turkey's arrival in Washington of the instruments of ratification of Sweden's accession.
The Turkish parliament ratified Sweden's membership in NATO in January after more than a year of delays that discouraged Western countries from uniting in the face of Russia's war against Ukraine.
Mr Erdogan is due to attend the NATO leaders' summit in Washington next month.
He was due to speak with his US counterpart Joe Biden last month, but what would have been their first meeting at the White House was postponed due to scheduling issues.
