Boris Johnson's bid to become Britain's next prime minister was boosted Monday by new support from one of his former rivals.

Health Secretary Matt Hancock threw his support behind Johnson, arguing that the former London mayor's “unique personality” would help rally support around a deal to leave the European Union.

“Having considered all options, I support Boris Johnson as the best candidate to unite the Conservative Party, so that we can deliver Brexit, and then unite the country behind an open, ambitious and forward-looking agenda, delivered with the necessary energy,” Hancock wrote in an opinion piece in The Times of London.

Hancock's endorsement came even though Johnson declined to participate in a televised debate Sunday night alongside his five rivals.

Channel 4 television left an empty desk for Johnson, who has a commanding lead after last week's first round of voting by Conservative lawmakers in the race to replace Theresa May.

May resigned as party leader earlier this month after failing to win parliamentary approval for her divorce deal with the European Union.

The Conservative Party's 313 lawmakers in the House of Commons will sort through the candidates in a series of leadership votes this week, with the final two names put to a postal vote by about 160,000 Conservative members nationwide. The winner, expected to be announced in July, will become the leader of the Conservative Party and Britain's next prime minister.
