Jokowi calls for closer cooperation to fight inflation amid climate concerns
JAKARTA: Indonesian President Joko Widodo (pictured) on Friday (June 14) called for closer cooperation between central and regional governments to combat inflation amid global climate concerns over rising temperatures and their impact on food security.
Widodo, also known as Jokowi, highlighted United Nations warnings about climate change and stressed the urgency of tackling severe heatwaves.
“In India, temperatures reached 50 degrees Celsius, and in Myanmar, 45.8 degrees Celsius, an intense heatwave.
“While people may seek shelter indoors to escape the heat, the impact on food security is a major concern,” he told the national coordination meeting for inflation control. at the State Palace.
Jokowi also stressed the importance of proactive measures to address the challenges posed by rising temperatures and potential droughts, especially to safeguard national food production.
“An estimated 50 million farmers could face water shortages, leading to food shortages and ultimately inflation,” he warned.
Over the past three months, he has ordered ministries to collaborate with the armed forces to install water pumps in various areas to support irrigation and ensure farmers have adequate water for their fields.
“We could install around 20,000 pumps in areas that mainly produce rice to irrigate fields,” he added.
Jokowi also stressed the need to modernize agriculture through smart technologies and urged local governments to encourage investments in processing industries to increase the value of agricultural production and establish an integrated distribution system . – Bernama
