Pope Francis to meet Biden, Zelenskiy, Macron and Modi at G7 summit

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) – Pope Francis will meet, among others, the leaders of the United States, Ukraine, France and India on the sidelines of the Group of 7 (G7) summit in Italy, a announced the Vatican on Thursday.

Francis, who warned in January of the “perverse” dangers of artificial intelligence, is due to take part in leaders’ discussions on the new technology on Friday.

He is the first pope to participate in the G7 discussions.

In releasing a schedule for his one-day appearance, the Vatican said Francis would have a bilateral meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden, a fellow Catholic.

The Vatican said it would also have individual talks with Ukraine's Volodymyr Zelenskiy, France's Emmanuel Macron, India's Narendra Modi, Brazil's Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Canada's Justin Trudeau, Turkey's Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Kenyan William Ruto, Algerian Abdelmadjid Tebboune, and the director of the International Monetary Fund, Kristalina Georgieva.

Francis and Biden met at the Vatican in 2021 and the president said the pope told him he was a “good Catholic” who could take communion even though conservative U.S. bishops wanted to deny it because of Biden's support for the right to abortion.

The two men also discussed last October the crisis in the Middle East after the Hamas attack on Israel.

Biden spoke movingly of his respect for the pope, praising his empathy and calling him an “honest man.” They stay in touch, Biden said.

In November 2020, the Pope offered his blessings and congratulations to Biden in a phone call to mark his election.
