Lahore court releases Imran Riaz Khan, citing 'insufficient' evidence in cases against him

Police in Lahore on Friday released broadcaster Imran Riaz Khan following a local court's decision to clear him of a recent charge, for which he was arrested the day before.

Riaz was arrested on Tuesday evening at the Allama Iqbal International Airport on charges of financial fraud.

Social media widely circulated footage of his arrest, showing the journalist in ihram attire while on his way to Hajj in Saudi Arabia, prompting the PTI to call for his release.

During Wednesday's hearing at the Model City Court, police requested seven days' remand, but the judge, after considering the arguments, granted only one day's remand.

The judge on Thursday acquitted the presenter of the fraud case, but Riaz was again apprehended for allegedly obstructing police functions, linked to an incident at the Lahore airport.

During today's hearing, the prosecution demanded a 10-day remand to identify other suspects, but after reviewing the case, magistrate Hafiz Kashif cleared Riaz of the charges.

The judgment highlighted the lack of evidence that Riaz was driving a vehicle during the incident or that he used force against a public official.

The judge declared the evidence insufficient and ordered Riaz's release unless required for other cases.

Following this, Riaz was released and footage of his release was shared on social media by his lawyer, Ashfaq, who said the false charges against Riaz had failed.
