Biden kisses surprised-looking Pope Francis at G7 summit

President Biden embraced a surprised-looking Pope Francis with an intimate forehead-to-forehead hug Friday during the second day of the G7 summit in Italy.
The 87-year-old pontiff was brought to a room bringing together world leaders to participate in a discussion on issues related to artificial intelligence, energy and the Africa-Mediterranean region. He is the first pope to attend a G7 meeting.
Other leaders who participated in the discussion included Argentine President Javier Milei, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Brazilian President Luiz Incio Lula da Silva.
Biden, 81, America's second Catholic president, met privately with Francis later Friday.
Members of the traveling press group, including videographers, were excluded from this meeting, except for a single press photographer who was allowed to take a photo of the interaction.
A senior administration official told reporters ahead of the meeting that the president and the pope would likely discuss the situation in Ukraine, the war between Israel and Hamas, as well as AI and climate change.
“I missed the meeting,” a senior official told reporters seeking news afterward during a White House press call before enthusing: “I can tell you they had a very warm hug when the Pope arrived at the AI session. »
The papal meeting was to be Biden's last major event before he leaves the summit for the United States to attend a Hollywood fundraiser hosted by actor George Clooney.
