Volcanic Donald Trump Screamed F-Bombs, Then Said He Loved Me

Donald Trump shouted crude insults at Anthony Fauci, then rushed in telling him he loved him and claimed he would win the 2020 election in a fucking landslide, top medical adviser reveals in his new memoirs.

In the highly anticipated book, Fauci describes conversations with Trump during the COVID-19 pandemic in which the then-president announced he loved me and then yelled at me on the phone.

Let's just say I found this unusual, Fauci writes, of conversations peppered with F-bombs, including the claim that Fauci had cost the American economy a trillion dollars.

The book, On Call: A Doctors Journey in Public Service, will be published in the United States next week as Trump and President Joe Biden's rematch gathers pace. The Daily Beast obtained a copy.

On the page, Fauci describes interactions with Trump as the administration struggled with the president's opposition to public health measures, including mask-wearing; Trump's desire to reopen the country; its indulgence toward counselors with dubious qualifications who advocate untested treatments; his bizarre suggestion that bleach could kill the virus; and, ultimately, his own hospitalization with COVID.

Fauci, the veteran director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID), has become the face of the pandemic and has tried to navigate Trump's erratic statements and his own medical expertise. He later became Biden's chief medical adviser and retired in 2022. In March of last year, the New York Post reported that Fauci sold his memoir for just under $5 million. Crown Publishing, an imprint of Penguin Random House, said that figure was inaccurate.

In 2020, weeks after the first COVID cases, Fauci became a Republican punching bag. Enemies viewed him as an avatar of the medical establishment when he relentlessly urged COVID precautions, starting with social distancing, moving to lockdowns, then masking and vaccinations.

He told Congress this month that he, his wife and adult daughter had faced death threats. During the pandemic, he benefited from a full security service.

In his book, Fauci reports his last conversation with Trump, in which Trump said he would be re-elected by a landslide over Biden, whom he considered stupid.

Now 83, Fauci writes about a life that took him from an apartment above his father's drugstore in Brooklyn, New York, to the White House and onto the world stage. As director of NIAID, he worked for every president from Ronald Reagan to Biden.

Fauci was on the front lines of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, worked against Ebola and ultimately became the leading scientific face of the U.S. attempt to combat COVID, which has now killed nearly 1.2 million Americans.

Such work meant dealing with a chaotic administration and an unstable president who was stoking virulent right-wing anger over public health measures, including mask wearing, social distancing and, ultimately, vaccination mandates.

As Trump once again shows up at the White House, Fauci's descriptions of their interactions and his work with a Biden administration that he said was a parallel universe in terms of its focus on defeating COVID will be eagerly read on both sides of the aisle.

Describing the frightening early days of the pandemic, when large swaths of American society were paralyzed and the economic and physical damage worsened, Fauci writes about his first experience. [of] the weight of the presidents’ rage.

The evening of June 3 [2020]my cell phone rang, Fauci wrote, and the caller, the president, started yelling at me.

Trump was angered by Fauci telling a reporter that coronavirus immunity typically lasts six months to a year, meaning that when a COVID-19 vaccine is found, booster shots would probably be necessary.

Fauci points out that this was common practice for viruses, including the flu, but also that his remark was wrongly reported on Twitter and in some media outlets because the Covid vaccine only protects people for a very short time. of time.

Trump didn't like what he heard.

It was quite a phone call, Fauci writes. The president was furious, saying I couldn't keep doing this to him. He said he loved me, but the country was in trouble and I was only making things worse.

He added that the stock market only rose by six hundred points in response to the positive news about the phase 1 vaccine and that it should have risen by a thousand points and therefore cost the country a trillion dollars .

I have pretty thick skin, Fauci writes, but being yelled at by the President of the United States, no matter how much he tells you he loves you, is no fun.

Fauci may risk angering Trump again, not only by detailing the conversation, but by saying that Trump told him, through an intermediary, that he was sorry. Trump is notoriously opposed to apologies.

Fauci says he was mystified but determined not to let [the call] throw me off my game.

Trump, however, seemed to feel in competition with Fauci, in terms of public visibility and acceptance.

Finally, Fauci describes what turned out to be my last conversation with President Trump.

At 9:30 a.m. on Sunday, November 1, 2020, Fauci writes, he was at home when Trump called from Air Force One.

Tony, Trump said, I really like you, and you know it, but what the hell are you doing? You really have to be positive. You constantly throw bombs at me.

Two days before Election Day, Trump was upset that Fauci told the Washington Post that the United States was still going to suffer a lot of damage. The number of COVID cases was 9 million, with 230,000 deaths.

Everyone wants me to fire you, Trump said. But I'm not going to fire you, you have too illustrious a career, but you have to be positive. The country cannot remain confined.

You have to give them hope that I love you, but so many people, not just in the White House, but across the country, hate you because of what you do.

In his book, Fauci describes the threats, including the day he opened an envelope and was covered in white powder, leading to a terrifying wait for the fire to clear.

Trump was determined to win a second term. On November 1, he continued: I'm going to win this election by a fucking landslide. Wait and see. I've always done things my way. And I always win, no matter what all the fucking people think. And that asshole Biden. He's so stupid. I'm going to kick his ass in this election.

Trump finally ended his 15-minute rant by saying, “Okay, Tony, I'll see you in a few days.” Take care of yourself.

Love me, don't love me, Fauci writes dryly.

Three days later, Trump lost the election to Biden, but did not concede. Although he is still in office, he has not spoken to Fauci again.

Describing his meetings with Biden, the president-elect, Fauci speaks of a pragmatic person, guided by integrity and empathy, who was clearly in charge and who would eventually return the White House to its pre-Trump normal, despite the deepening political schisms in the United States. big.

On December 22, 2020, as Biden prepared to become president, Fauci appeared on television to receive the first COVID vaccine.

An alcohol swab, a small pinch when inserting the needle, a bandage and it was done, he wrote. It was two days before my eightieth birthday, and knowing that millions of Americans would soon be vaccinated as I had just had was the greatest gift I could imagine.
