Donald Trump to speak in Detroit this weekend at Turning Point event

DETROIT (WXYZ) Former President Donald Trump will be in Detroit to speak Saturday at the People's Convention at Huntington Place.

The convention is organized by the nonprofit Turning Point, which promotes conservative politics.

Friday was the first day of the convention.

“This is our first time here, so we’re excited to see all the speakers and see what they have in store for the future,” said Adrian native Staci Neel.

Neel says she has family in town from Houston who are attending the event.

“I think we're going to see real change that our country needs and I think if Donald Trump, which is my vote, comes back to power, things will change and we can restore this economy,” Neel said.

This is the first time Trump has spoken in the city of Detroit since his supporters attempted to “stop the count” at the same convention center in 2020, believing the election was stolen. At the time, Huntington Place was called the TCF Center.

The appearance also comes just weeks after a jury of his peers found Trump guilty of 34 counts of falsifying business records in the so-called “Hush Money trial.”

“I know there's a lot going on around him, but I think he's coming this time with a stronger, more positive message,” Neel said. “I think if people stop and listen and he addresses the points he wants to, it will make a real difference.”

While many Republican supporters await Trump's message, other Detroit-area voters say they have already decided to vote Democratic.

“Don't wait until you need us to come see us. That's what I don't like. If you like us, come all the time like you do everywhere else,” said Tasha Graham, a resident of Detroit.

Graham says when voting this fall, issues like reproductive rights and voting rights are a priority. Graham says that while Trump faces plenty of opposition from some voters, she doesn't expect large crowds to protest his appearance in Detroit this weekend.

“Putting our message out this way draws more attention to the bad things rather than the good things,” Graham said.

Politics professor Dave Dulio of Oakland University says voters like Graham are likely the demographic Trump and his campaign are trying to capture in the coming months.

“Polls and available data, even from 2020, show that President Trump has increased his support within the African American community and I think that could be another reason for him to want to come to the city of Detroit and make his speech,” Dulio said.

Dulio says Detroiters and residents of surrounding cities can expect to see a lot more visits like this between now and November, as voting margins are expected to be razor-thin this election cycle.

“Interestingly, support for both candidates has remained strong, at the same levels previously. You might hear Trump mention that he thinks he's being put on the railroad tracks or that the law is fair and he would do it because it generates enthusiasm among the base,” Dulio said.

Donald Trump is expected to speak Saturday afternoon. However, the exact time has not been revealed. 7 News Detroit will cover the event live on-air and online.
