Trump celebrates 78th birthday in West Palm Beach as Rubio makes surprise appearance

West Palm Beach, Fla. — Former President Donald Trump celebrated his 78th birthday Friday night at a packed Palm Beach convention center packed with supporters — including Republican Sen. Marco Rubio — while continuing his familiar lines of attack against President Biden regarding immigration and foreign policy.

“Under my leadership, we have not had a war,” Trump said. “Instead of a globalist warmonger in the White House, you had a peacemaker at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.”

The presumptive Republican presidential candidate seized on the arrest this week of eight Tajik nationals accused of having links to ISIS. Before their arrest, the men had crossed the U.S.-Mexico border without proper documentation and were summoned to appear in immigration court, according to a senior Department of Homeland Security official.

“Our country has never been in danger like it is right now. Just this week, ISIS arrested not one, not two, but eight suspected terrorists at the highest level of terrorism,” Trump said.

The birthday party was hosted by Club 47, a Trump fan club based in Palm Beach. Tickets for the celebration – priced between $25 and $60 – had sold out several days before.

Before his speech, Trump received a six-tier cake decorated with images of Trump and topped with a red MAGA hat made of fondant.

It was a show of loyalty by Florida supporters and congressional allies to Trump about two weeks after he was convicted in his Manhattan “hush money” criminal trial on 34 counts of accusation of falsifying business records.

Also in attendance on Friday was Rubio – who is among those tipped as a possible running mate for Trump, sources told CBS News. Rubio gave a speech before Trump took the stage, also attacking Mr Biden over the border.

“We now have terrorists, criminals and drug traffickers coming into our country through the open border, and he has invited them into the United States,” Rubio said.

However, last week the president issued an executive order that makes it easier for U.S. immigration officials to expel large numbers of migrants without processing their asylum claims.

This was Rubio's first appearance on the 2024 campaign trail alongside Trump. It also came two days after the senator – in an interview with Telemundo – defended Trump's previous controversial comments in which he claimed immigrants are “poisoning the blood of our country.”

In Wednesday's interview, Rubio claimed that Trump's comment wasn't really about race.

“It's a saying that he uses, but it has nothing to do with race, because at the end of the day he's talking about the country, not the people,” Rubio said. “The country is threatened by this influx of people, which we now know even includes criminals and terrorists.”

Trump could face legal hurdles in choosing Rubio as his vice presidential candidate, as both claim residency in Florida.
