Lord Heseltine says Tories have done 'remarkable' things – but people want 'change'
Firstly on the Political center Show is the former deputy prime minister Lord Heseltine.
When asked how he thinks the Conservative election campaign will go, he first responds that the party has presided over an “extraordinarily difficult period in economic history.”
He says the Conservatives have achieved “very remarkable and impressive things” but admits people now feel “frustrated” and want “change”.
“The real judgment you have to make in this election is what do you mean by change?” he says.
Lord Heseltine says the “question at the heart of the election” is “people”.
He singles out Nigel Farage as someone he says is “ready to exploit that human anxiety about anyone who is different”.
“You can stir up all sorts of horrible emotions… that's what Nigel Farage knows how to do. The only consequence of what he does is you'll have a bigger Labor majority,” he says.
Conservatives “cannot inflame racism and nationalism”
Lord Heseltine said he would be “horrified” if Mr Farage was welcomed into the Conservative Party.
He claims that if the conservatives lost the elections, their “return to power would be from the center”.
“This will certainly not happen by purifying the most basic human instincts of racism and nationalism,” he says.
Asked if he was heartbroken by what happened to the party, Lord Heseltine said he could not help but “feel sad” after decades of service.
“This is not the end of the Conservative Party, they will come back,” he said.
