Chief Justice Isa clarifies that Supreme Court is not the source of Imran Khan audio leak

Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa said the purported audio conversation involving Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan and judges was not disclosed by the Supreme Court, according to The News on Saturday. After questioning IT staff, it was found that some voices in the audio did not belong to the Supreme Court.

This conversation, which took place during the second hearing of a case regarding the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendments, was leaked and widely shared on social media. Justice Athar Minallah said that although the audio was leaked, the dialogues took place in open court.

It is also noted that during the first hearing of the NAB amendment case, a photo of Imran Khan from courtroom No. 1 was leaked and went viral on social media. Khan appeared in court via video link from Adiala Prison.

The newly elected cabinet members of the Supreme Court Press Association (PAS) were sworn in before Justice Isa at the Supreme Court bench on Friday. The event took place in the presence of Attorney General Mansoor Usman Awan and Justices Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Athar Minallah and Naeem Akhtar Afghan.

The new PAS cabinet includes President Mian Aqeel Afzal, Vice President Ghulam Nabi Yousafzai, Finance Secretary Raja Basharat, Ikramullah Joya, Asia Kausar, Mian Abid Nisar and General Secretary Imran Waseem. After the swearing-in, the Chief Justice and other judges had an informal discussion with PAS members.

Chief Justice Isa said he had written articles in the past, as had his mother, Saeeda Qazi Isa. He showed copies of an English daily featuring his articles, pointing out that they required significant research at the time, unlike today where communication is much easier.

The chief justice highlighted the difficulties associated with media coverage of court proceedings, mentioning that journalists often include contextual information in their reports that judges may have forgotten. He remembers compiling media laws and publishing them in book form.

Justice Isa also referred to the Zulfikar Ali Bhutto case, noting that the Lahore High Court wrote 627 paragraphs in its decision, while the Supreme Court wrote 963.
