Pope Francis becomes first pontiff to attend G7 meeting

On June 14, Pope Francis traveled to Borgo Egnazia, a town in southern Italy, for the 50th G7 summit. It was the first time a pope participated in the gathering of world economic leaders.

The June 13-15 summit is chaired by Italy and includes participation from the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Japan and the United Kingdom.

The presidents of the European Council and the Commission, as well as many other state leaders and representatives of international organizations were also invited to the annual event.

According to a AP News report June 14Pope Francis called on leaders to prioritize human dignity in the development and use of artificial intelligence, during his afternoon address.

He further warned: “We would condemn humanity to a hopeless future if we remove people's ability to make decisions about themselves and their lives, condemning them to depend on the choices of machines.

No machine should ever choose to kill a human being, the Pope said.

Pope Francis' program for the event also included bilateral talks with leaders such as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, French President Emmanuel Macron and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.

The Pontiff also held a second session of bilateral talks attended by US President Joe Biden, Kenyan President William Samoei Ruto and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
