President Erdoan says CHP leader Zel can't stand his visit to the CHP

Turkish President and head of the Justice and Development Party (AKP), Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, said on June 15 that the leader of the main opposition Republican People's Party (CHP), Özgür Özel “could not support” his new visit to the CHP.
Responding to journalists' questions upon returning from the G7 summit, Erdoğan said: “We wanted to bring softening and politeness to politics by making a return visit. But those who do not understand this politeness held a press conference in Istanbul and were visibly under the influence of certain people (referring to Mayor Ekrem İmamoğlu). So it’s not a softening. This does not bring a new beginning to politics. They obviously couldn't digest our new visit.
His comments come after recent alliance debates involving the AKP, MHP and CHP.
A day after Erdoğan visited the CHP headquarters and met with Ayşe Ateş, the wife of former Gray Wolves leader Sinan Ateş who was assassinated in 2022, the head of the government's Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), Devlet Bahçeli declared on June 12 that it was the MHP party. “most sincere wish” that a broad alliance between the AKP and the CHP be formed.
Responding to Bahçeli, Özel said: “Let me extend an invitation to Mr. Bahçeli. If he is not satisfied with his alliance, he can join our alliance. The name of our alliance is Turkey Alliance. No one should offer us any alliance because today's leaders will bear this responsibility. (Bahçeli) should not push his accomplice towards us after bringing the country to this point.
Commenting on the remarks, Erdoğan said Bahçeli made a statement “with a statesman's approach, calmly, without giving any opportunity for discussion.”
“If the CHP chief had tolerated our return visit, he would not have felt the need to make such a statement. Faced with such a declaration, as President of the Republic, as leader of the Justice and Development Party, I would even be wrong to respond to it. But it doesn't matter what they do. As a People's Alliance, we will maintain the same position, the same solidarity,” he added.
On June 11, President and leader of the AKP Recep Tayyip Erdoğan paid another visit to the leader of the CHP, the main opposition party, Özgür Özel, marking his first visit to the CHP headquarters after 18 years.
He also welcomed Ayşe Ateş and her children to the Presidential Palace complex. Ateş is the wife of Sinan Ateş, former leader of the far-right ultranationalist group Gray Wolves linked to the MHP.
Some members of the MHP and the Gray Wolves were allegedly involved in the assassination, while Bahçeli denies the allegations.
