Government intends to jail Imran for five years, says Ahsan – Journal

LAHORE: The PML-N government has decided on keeping Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) founding leader Imran Khan in jail for his five-year tenure until 2029 over concerns of economic stability.

People come to us and tell us that if Pakistan is to progress, Imran Khan will have to be kept in jail for five years, said Federal Minister for Planning and Development and PML-N General Secretary Ahsan Iqbal during from an interview with reporters here on Saturday.

He said that (if Imran Khan comes out of prison) there will be sit-ins and fights again and the country cannot afford that.

There is a voice of the people [that] Imran Khan should remain in jail for five years, he said, adding that Imran Khan was an angry man and it was not known with whom he had quarreled.

Mr. Iqbal said it was a watershed moment for both Pakistan and the PTI. It is not possible that negotiations are taking place with the PTI, on the one hand, and that, on the other hand, it is waging a campaign against state institutions. If Imran Khan wants to engage with the government, he will have to show seriousness, he said and added that Pakistan currently needs continuity in government policy.

The minister seems wary of conflicts between the judiciary and the establishment

The minister indirectly attacked the judiciary by saying that whenever Mr. Khan was going through a difficult time, he used the shoulder of the judiciary for help. Imran Khan was facing serious cases in court, he claimed.

Imran Khan has been in jail since August last year in different cases. The PML-N leader seemed wary of the ongoing tussle between the judiciary and the establishment.

To a question on the confrontation between the judiciary and the military establishment, Iqbal said: “Both should ask whether this confrontation is better for the country.

He said that in the past, politicians fought against the establishment and vice versa.

Now we must move forward together for the good of the country. We cannot afford to fight against each other, he said, adding that the sovereignty of the country could have been at stake if we had continued to fight against each other. He said an enabling environment was needed to invest in the country.

Ahsan Iqbal said that the government would take forward the CPEC project. China has always supported Pakistan in crises, he said, adding that in the next three years, Pakistan would face a greater debt servicing challenge.
