Donald Trump's Supreme Court decision could backfire, says George Conway

Donald Trump's attempt to have the Supreme Court declare that he has absolute legal immunity for actions taken while president, preventing him from being prosecuted in the federal election subversion case of 2020, could “backfire”. This could lead to the Republican being tried in the fall, according to George Conway.

The anti-Trump lawyer and conservative made the comments during an appearance on CNN on Friday. Conway said the Supreme Court would rule before the end of June and the former president would “lose big,” which could lead to the trial continuing after 81 days.

On May 30, Trump was convicted of 34 counts of falsifying business records, which prosecutors said he did to conceal the payment of hush money to Stormy Daniels, a former pornographic actress, before the election 2016 presidential election. Trump said the trial was “rigged” and that he should appeal. Newsweek reached out to representatives of Donald Trump's 2024 presidential campaign via email Saturday for comment outside of regular business hours.

The former president was also indicted for mishandling classified documents and breaking the law in attempting to overturn the 2020 presidential election, both federally and in the state of Georgia specifically. Trump has denied any wrongdoing and has repeatedly said the charges against him are politically motivated.

Conway spoke to CNN about the Supreme Court's ruling on Trump's immunity request: “I trust the court on this. I think Donald Trump is going to lose. I think he's going to lose big.

“There may be some flaws in the opinion that might add a few steps to the process, but ultimately I don't think his argument is going to hold up. In terms of delay, I wish they had I didn't take the case…but the thing is, I don't think there's a big conspiracy or even an effort by some judges to delay the case in order to help Trump. “

Conway added that Trump's legal bid could result in the presumptive 2024 Republican presidential nominee being tried shortly before the November election.

Conway said: “The fact is that if the decision falls the week of June 24, the last week of the term, it could mean that the case will be tried in late September/early October, which would be highly unfavorable.

“The reason is that when the case went to the appeals court, it was 81 days before the trial, and the court said they were going to keep that 81 days. And if you add 81 days at the end of June, basically, we're in the middle of the fall campaign, so this could backfire on Trump.”

In February, an appeals court ruled that Trump did not have presidential immunity preventing him from being tried in the election subversion case, although later that month the Supreme Court announced that it would repeal the decision.

Trump was indicted on August 1, 2023, on four counts, including conspiracy to defraud the United States and conspiracy to obstruct an official proceeding related to his efforts to overturn the result of the 2016 presidential election .

The former president continues to insist that the 2020 vote was rigged against him, although this claim has been repeatedly rejected in courts and by independent election experts. On January 6, 2021, hundreds of Trump supporters stormed Congress in an attempt to stop the certification of the 2020 election results, during which Ashli Babbitt, 35, was shot and killed by a police officer.
