MHP leader Bahceli refutes allegations of break with President Erdogan's AKP
Devlet Bahceli, the leader of the Nationalist Movement Party (MHP), an ally of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), on Sunday refuted allegations of tensions between the two parties.
Bahceli spoke to reporters after visiting the grave of Alparslan Turkes, the founder of the MHP, following the Eid al-ADha prayer on Sunday.
He responded to allegations of fissures within the People's Alliance, an electoral alliance between the ruling AKP and the MHP.
“(Our alliance) is not cracking: we are made of rocks, not adobe,” Bahceli noted. “(The allegations) come from a place of lies and sedition.”
Bahceli also stressed that the MHP stands with President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the People's Alliance.
Rumors of tensions between the MHP and the AKP emerged after President Erdogan's visit to the main opposition party, the Republican People's Party (CHP), a first for Erdogan in 18 years. CHP leader Ozel also visited Erdogan in May.
The process of normalization in Turkish politics between the ruling and opposition parties has left some actors unhappy, and they are trying to create divisions within the People's Alliance, Bahceli said.
