Pakistani minister says angry Imran Khan should remain jailed until 2029 to ensure

A Pakistani minister said the country's people believe that keeping Imran Khan in prison for five years until 2029 is necessary for economic stability.

Federal Minister for Planning and Development Ahsan Iqbal has expressed concern that the release of the 71-year-old Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder could lead to further protests and unrest, which the country cannot afford.

Khan has been in jail since August last year in different cases.

He added that people felt it was necessary to keep him behind bars for the economic stability of the country.

Iqbal said it was a watershed moment for both Pakistan and the PTI.

He argued that meaningful dialogue with the PTI cannot take place while the party simultaneously engages in campaigns against state institutions.

“If Imran Khan wants to engage with the government, he will have to show seriousness,” he said, adding that Pakistan currently needs continuity in government policy.

Fawad Chaudhry, former information and broadcasting minister in the previous Khan-led government, said Iqbal had revealed his government's political and economic strategy, which keeps Khan in prison.

Chaudhry said it was clear that the government itself believed that it could only rule by stick and that it had no standing among the people of Pakistan.

Iqbal responded to Chaudhry's statement on X, saying it was not the government's strategy but the voice of the people.

He added that Khan had ruled the country for four years but had only soup kitchens to show for it.
