Trump to hold rally at Temple University's Liacouras Center in North Philadelphia
PHILADELPHIA (CBS) — Former President Donald Trump will hold a campaign rally Saturday at the Liacouras Center on the Temple University campus in North Philadelphia.
The rally is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. and doors will open at 3 p.m., according to its website.
Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee for the 2024 election, will “highlight how Biden's weak presidency is devastating American families” at the rally.
“In a presidential election year, it is common for political campaigns to hold large-scale events on college campuses,” Temple said in a statement. “As a public university, Temple has a policy of making suitable space available for rental to third-party organizations for these events, regardless of political party or position.”
Temple does not cover any fees associated with the event as the Liacouras Center is managed and operated by a third party company.
The university also wrote that “a speaker's presence on campus does not constitute an endorsement of Temple University, nor do the views expressed by a speaker necessarily reflect those of the administration, faculty, staff or students of the university.
Recently, Trump was convicted on all 34 counts stemming from a $130,000 “hush money” payment his lawyer Michael Cohen made to adult film star Stormy Daniels in the days leading up to the election from 2016. He also faces charges in three other criminal cases.
Pennsylvania is a key battleground state for Trump and Mr. Biden in the 2024 election after Mr. Biden won the Commonwealth, which helped him win the presidency in 2020. The two spent time in the Philadelphia area during their election campaign this year. .
In early May, Trump held a beach rally in Wildwood, New Jersey. Trump was also at Sneaker Con in Philadelphia in February, where he debuted Trump-branded sneakers.
Mr. Biden made several stops in Pennsylvania during his election campaign, including Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
In late May, Mr. Biden made a speech to black voters at Girard College in North Philly. A March CBS News poll showed Trump nearly doubled his support among black voters, to 23 percent. Experts say eroding support in November would be costly for Mr. Biden.
A recent CBS News poll in May showed the race between Trump and Mr. Biden was close in Pennsylvania. Last week, another CBS News poll showed them neck and neck nationally and in the battlegrounds.
