A recent poll by YouGov for the Progressive Policy Institute (PPI) shows that the Reform Party doubled its support among working-class voters between September 2023 and May 2024 (from 7 to 14 percent), even before Farage returns to the leadership of the party.
PPI's Claire Ainsley, author of “The New Working Class” and Starmer's former policy manager at Labor headquarters, said many working class voters feel “abandoned by the Tories”.
“Many voters feel they have been betrayed by the Tories' failure to deliver the supposed benefits of Brexit,” she said.
“It’s not about what Sunak or the Tories say, it’s about their record. And their record is so bad on the key issue they have made Brexit policy, which is improving public services and immigration.”
Johnson memorably promised after his 2019 election victory that once Brexit was “finished,” the country would benefit from its new regulatory and economic freedoms.
On the contrary, living standards have continued to decline over the past five years, the tax burden is at its highest level in 70 years and immigration has only increased.
It is the party's failure on these core conservative issues that affects conservative voters most deeply. Sunak's D-Day blunder earlier this month, offending those who care deeply about defence, only made matters worse.
With all this in mind, even the most ardent conservatives in Dover or Portsmouth cannot be surprised by the polls or by the scale of betrayal felt in these key coastal towns.
