Eid-ul-Adha Wishes: Eid-ul-Adha 2024: PM Modi extends greetings to Maldives President Mizzu
In a press release, the Indian High Commission to the Maldives shared the Prime Minister's Eid wishes for the President and people of Maldives.
“On the auspicious occasion of Eid Al-Adha, Honorable Prime Minister of India @NarendraModi extended warm greetings to His Excellency the President of Maldives, Dr. @MMuizzu, the Government and people of the Republic of Maldives ” he said in a statement. post on X.
In his message, Prime Minister Modi “underlined the values of sacrifice, compassion and brotherhood, embodied by this festival, which are essential for building a peaceful and inclusive world.”
“The Prime Minister also highlighted the celebration of the festival, as part of the multicultural heritagethroughout India with fervor and cheerfulness,” the message reads.
President Muizzu, widely seen as a pro-China leader, demanded the complete withdrawal of Indian military personnel from the Maldives, escalating tensions. In response, India withdrew its troops before the May 10 deadline set by Muizzu. Indian military personnel were stationed in the Maldives to operate and maintain two helicopters and a Dornier aircraft that India had gifted earlier.
Despite these tensions, Prime Minister Modi's greetings to Muizzu could be a testament to India's efforts to repair ties and put relations back on track. The invitation extended to President Muizzu to Prime Minister Modi's swearing-in ceremony was part of India's Neighborhood First policy, aimed at strengthening ties with neighboring countries and ensuring regional stability.
The Maldives has a special place in Indian initiatives such as 'SAGAR' (Security and Growth for All in the Region) and the Modi government's 'Neighborhood First Policy'. This is evident from India's continued efforts to maintain close relations with the Maldives, despite recent tensions.
But India extended an olive branch to him by inviting him to Prime Minister Modi's inauguration ceremony.
