Rawalpindi police files case against PTI leaders over protest outside Adiala jail

Rawalpindi police have filed a case against several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders and workers, including party chief Seemabia Tahir, for staging a protest outside Adiala jail, where party founder Imran Khan is currently in custody, The Express Tribune reported.

The case was filed under Section 144 of the Pakistan Penal Code, accusing the protesters of breaking the law, obstructing police officers and damaging police uniforms. Following the protest outside Adiala Jail, six PTI workers namely Naveed Akhtar, Noman Tariq, Zubair Hussain, Aqeel Khan and Maqsood Zafar were arrested by the Rawalpindi Police.

According to The Express Tribune, the case also includes the names of five other people, including Ahmed Hasan and Mubasher Kanju, as well as several others whose identities have not been disclosed. These individuals were involved in the protest outside Adiala prison, according to the Rawalpindi police report.

The Express Tribune reported that the PTI had staged protests across the country, specifically in response to allegations of fraud in the February 8 general elections. The party is advocating for the return of what it claims is its “stolen mandate” and the speedy release of their leaders, including former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan. Khan has been detained in Adiala Prison since May 2023.

On March 10, the PTI staged nationwide protests against allegations of electoral manipulation during the 12th national general elections held in Pakistan on February 8. These protests were the subject of severe repression in Punjab, where a coalition government led by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) currently governs. As a result, many PTI workers and leaders, including Sardar Latif Khosa and Salman Akram Raja, were arrested.

The February 8 general elections saw the PTI emerge with the highest number of elected candidates. However, the party has consistently accused the electoral process of being marred by fraud, amid disruptions such as the cutting of cellular and internet services during the vote.

During the India vs Pakistan match at the 2024 T20 World Cup in New York on June 9, a plane carrying a banner reading 'Free Imran Khan' was seen above the stadium. PTI shared a video of this incident on its official X account, captioning it “Free Imran Khan”.

Imran Khan, 71, and Prime Minister of Pakistan from 2018 to 2022, has been detained in Adiala Prison since August 2023 on various charges, including the Toshakhana affair and allegations related to an un-Islamic marriage.
